Woodstock progress vs hearthstone equinox

Hello all,

I am looking for some feedback on these stoves. I have a 4200 sq' house all on one level. It's kinda cut up and I know that whatever I get is going to need a little help. We live in Wyoming and have had some 20 below temps the last couple months.

I want the most heat I can get but the ability to get some decent burn times as well. Don't we all. Lol

I saw on the Woodstock site that the progress with a 2.8 cubic foot firebox is supposed to put out more heat than the equinox with...

Got my new stove!

Out with the old, cracked and rusty Jotul, in with the new QuadraFire! Only had time for a small-medium break-in fire so far, but enough to get the paint smoking a bit and stink up the place. Already like the fact that the floor next to the stove stays cool, instead of too hot to stand on in bare feet.

Need Help: New Chimney & Hearth Install

Hey guys,

Finally getting around to installing a new class A chimney and hearth pad and I'm looking for advice and tips from the pros. My initial thought was to begin with the hearth pad. My wife and I have picked out some porcelain tile and I made a cardboard template. I was going to take out the laminate flooring and tile straight to the concrete underneath. Ideally, I wanted the hearth pad to end at the edge of the one wall and not stick out past it as I don't think aesthetically that...

Four big oaks down, now what?

I bought some land and find that high wind from a nearby tornado toppled four giant oaks. I need to go back and identify but probably red oak. These are tall, mature trees, probably 30" DBH or so and they are fully intact, with huge rootball plucked from the ground. The leaves are still on the trees. I guess they could have fallen a year ago, but more likely, two years ago. I bucked a larger limb and the pieces are a bit lighter than I expected, but since they have dried some, I guess that...

Fireplace design - air inlet question

Hi all,

I am new to this forum, great info sofar!
For the sake of nostalgia, I am building a traditional fireplace (not a Rumford model). Rough dimensions: front opening of 25in width and 29in height. Flue liner from the top of the smoke chamber 27ft with an 8in inside diameter.
It is safe to say that the air consumption will be around 12,000 cu/ft per hour.
The living room (5,000 cu ft) is isolated quite well and depends on floor heating. I’d like to avoid sucking all the warm air out,...

Harman Vacuum Issue

Hello All,

I have a Harman P61-2 pellet stove and I am having a vacuum issue. The auger wouldn't start until I bypassed the vacuum switch. This has led me to be sure it is a vacuum issue that won't allow my stove to feed.

I have cleaned the stove recently, and even did another clean when this issue occurred. My only thoughts are two things: 1) My door gasket needs to be changed 2) My vacuum switch needs to be replaced.

Are there any other ideas anyone has that would be causing this?...

Anyone have a Enviro Evolution. It is supposed to have air wash but the previous owner put the new gasket all the way around. I don't know if I should remove from the top or the bottom. Manual is absolutely no help at all.

Thanks

Who has has had a mini split, Fujistu or Mitsubishi, in one of the colder parts of the world (like Northern U.S.) for at least a full season ? No need for AC.
1. How well they heat below 20 F, occasionally down to 0 F.
2. Problems
3. Reliability and maintenance
4. Electricity cost in winter
5. Noise
6. New cost of unit(s) installed
Thanks.

Hearthstone Clydesdale or BK Princess?

Hi all,

I've narrowed my search for an insert to either the Clydesdale or the Princess. I've called around to several nearby retailers and they are both similarly priced. I've done a general spec comparison but I'd love to hear some feedback on advantages/disadvantages of these stoves. Of note, this will be my first insert. I have natural gas for our furnace but was looking to have a decent supplementary heat source. The location of the insert will be at the far end of a large 3,000...

Complete newbie question - what would you install

The reason for venturing onto this forum & this post. I am getting crowns put on my chimneys soon & while the guy is there I decided that I would like to take at least some initial steps to getting one of my fireplaces operational. Primarily will be doing the initial step of installing a new stainless steel flu as I currently have an unlined brick masonry one. I’m trying to research options as best I can

If you had a blank slate to get a fireplace in operation what route would you go?...

Can Laminate Sheet Be Cut Precisely?

I've installed a few laminate countertops before, typically cutting the lam with a scoring knife, gluing on, then trimming with a router with lam bit. Now I'm working on a bathroom countertop for my mother-in-law, and she's not satisfied with how the lam edges were glued/trimmed. [I think they're as good as any I've done, and tiny flaws aren't usually seen by folks.] She wants me to cut the laminate for the top to a precise fit, so there's no need to router the edge afterward. I'm very...

My smoke falleth to the ground

On the sometimes phenomenon of smoke exiting the chimney and immediately falling straight to the ground like a sack of bricks...
I only grasp in theory why this happens and that there are many factors that affect it: an inversion layer, the whimsy of wind, the micro aerodynamics created by the roof/chimney formation, etc.

But what doesn't jive to me is how a virtual geyser of gas that's extremely hot relative to the frigid air it is shooting itself up into does not continue to rise at...

Blaze King Bypass question

Sorry if it's been asked before. Searches came up dry for me.

I have a blaze King ultra. Love it. I have a friend with a King as well who actually was the one to recommend it to me. When chatting with him recently, I learned that when he does a reload, he throws the bypass immediately. I asked 'only on hot reloads, right'? He said he does it even when he's starting from a cold restart. His thinking being that he might as well throw as much heat through it to get up to temp as fast as...

I've been lurking here for a few weeks trying to learn what I can about saws and stoves! You all seem like a very knowledgeable and kind group willing to help out a newbie.

Here is what we are going for. We live in SW Idaho, winters are mild to cold. Most days are in the 30s with lows in the teens. We will go weeks, or months like this year with highs in the teens to single digits to lows below zero. We have a 2300 sq/ft house (not to scale floor plan attached) that was built in 2008...
