Englander 30NCH not burning all coals

Ok, I just bought an Englander 30NCH from Home Depot. It's in my basement, which is not finished. I have a 2 story farmhouse built around 1900, part of it maybe well before 1900. The ground floor is around 1400 sq ft, the 2nd floor 600 sq ft, and the basement is around 1000 sq ft. The house is pretty drafty, though I did blow in insulation into the walls when I remodeled it a couple years ago. So, I know I'm asking a lot out of the stove, but I have a boiler and radiators as well so I'm...

Whitfield Auger issue

Whitfield Profile 15+ years service, auger quit working so I took off the motor and put power, 120 volts, to it and it worked. I disconnected the pressure switch and got a little over 4 volts from those connections/wires, jumped the wires and still not working. Should the wires to the pressure switch yield 120 volts or is the 4 volts a control circuit and correct? Any ideas on what could be the issue since the motor works on the test bench?

Hi All!
I figured some of you in the woodburning community might have gone this route.

For a number of years now, my new year's resolution has been to simplify life. In the past, I never actually made any changes, because it was such a vague idea and I had no real goal attached and no real driving force to make changes.

Last month, my wife and I watched a documentary on Netflix about minimalism and it resonated strongly with both of us. We picked up a few books by the guys in the...

I just seen a new one on Menards sale ad today, the Shelter SF2600. There is no info on it at their website or HY-Cs (the parent company that owns the Firechief/Shelter wood furnace co.) But it is definitely a new model http://www.menards.com/main/heating-cooling/fireplaces-stoves/add-on-furnaces/shelter-sf2600-indoor-wood-furnace-1-500-3-500-sq-ft/p-1461692458747-c-12809.htm?tid=7449745222950322705&bargainStoreId=3258

Craigslist scam buyers? - wood stove -

I know there are selling scams but here's my situation..

I picked up a wood stove insert fairly cheap. I had intentions of installing in a garage/woodshop as a stand-alone stove. I spoke with my building inspector and he gave me the safe practices of doing so... Elevate the stove 24" off the floor, keep combustibles more than 20' away.... This was going to be a temporary install until I get a waste oil heater (maybe next season). But, after speaking with my insurance company, they said they...

A Hearthstone Heritage D.I.Y. Ceramic Baffle Modification Relplacement

I was a little dismayed when I realized my Heritage was not burning to specs this fall. The beginning of my third winter using this stove. Telling signs were the faster speed at which logs were being consumed and difficulty getting the good, low recirculating burn from low settings. I had been through this once before at the end of my first season with the Heritage. I got a light and looked up at the baffle. A one inch hole was visible in the ceramic plate.

There ya go, thousands of...

I have question about ceiling height from the top of the stove. I have been reading all over the place about having a good 6' from the stove up. I have almost 4'. I have a pellet stove that has the pipe going straight out threw the wall behind it. Now I would have to go threw the ceiling. This is in a add on room I made. It has a wood ceiling, with lots of windows behind. I can shield the back, and the floor, but will I also have to shield the ceiling?? I also heard from reading if I find a...

Hi folks,
I just picked up what I believe is Mama Bear. Just thought I'd post a few pictures and see if if anyone could possibly date it. I believe these are older draft caps. I'm not sure if the spring handle is original. I'm guessing 1977 based on reading on here so far. View attachment 194307 View attachment 194308 View attachment 194309

Guys,

I came here 3 years ago after getting my new englander. Well, I burned for one season and my house has never been that warm and it was great despite the work involved. Well, my entire heat pump went out at the first of summer so I replaced it with a new Trane XR15 as well as the new indoor unit. Long story short, I sold the englander to a friend to help him out.

Should I go back with one just like it? It was good but I had cold coals the next morning and had to re lite. Partly...

Hi. I have an eko 40. I have been running this boiler for a year and a half now with relatively no trouble. My problem is I have a good gasification fire going but the system is not heating up. I have 1000 gallon storage that is taking everything from the boiler. Inside the room the stack temp is 220 the same as it has been for a year and a half. The top of the stack is 153 degrees. I come home from work and the system is usually 140 degrees I light a fire and in about 5-6 hours the system...

Attic Insulation Shield Question

Curious how to go about using my Supervent attic insulation shield correctly in an awkward ceiling install. My Class A goes through a garage roof and then about 8" higher goes through my house roof. I had planned on building off the garage rafter framing where the shield would be nice and level and extend up into the attic space.

Hard to explain so I will attach photos. In the roof photo the chimney will come out in the 2nd joist space to the right of the unused chimney. The other...

Hello- I am new to stoves, but have dealt with a few fireplaces. Moved this summer into a nice, small rental house with ancient electric baseboard heat, but a ready-to-go hearth setup which vents into a good brick chimney with terra cotta sleeving. There was a stove here in the recent past, but a previous tenant took it or got rid of it. The house is bi-level (on a cliff overlooking the river); total space is maybe 900 sq. ft. The chimney extends about 20 feet from the opening in the hearth...

Block off plate vs insulation

Trying again...

The installer is coming tomorrow 1/12/17. He's putting in a Regency I3100 insert into my existing ~30 year old heatform by Heatilator (at least that's what I was told it was). They are removing several heat tubes to install the liner and maybe some of the existing damper.

We agreed on a two-phase install:
1. liner
2. Insert

In between the two steps will allow me to go in there and fabricate a block-off-plate. However the mentioned they can stuff the existing damper...

Fireplace design - air inlet question

Hi all,

I am new to this forum, great info sofar!
For the sake of nostalgia, I am building a traditional fireplace (not a Rumford model). Rough dimensions: front opening of 25in width and 29in height. Flue liner from the top of the smoke chamber 27ft with an 8in inside diameter.
It is safe to say that the air consumption will be around 12,000 cu/ft per hour.
The living room (5,000 cu ft) is isolated quite well and depends on floor heating. I’d like to avoid sucking all the warm air out,...

Quadrafire Classic Bay, No Call Light

I do not use a thermostat, I just have an on off switch in its place. Earlier today when I left I flipped the switch off, and I noticed it sounded like a fan or something was running that normally isn't. The stove had just run out of pellets so it was shutting down anyway. I definitely noticed something sounded different, but I didn't think much of it. When I got home I filled the hopper, flipped the switch on and I get nothing. No noise, no red call light, just nothing. I'm not even sure...

Valor 739 ILN

Installed 2 Valor 739 ILN inserts back to back in a see through masonry fireplace. Both sets of 3" venting share the same 16x16 flue. Made a custom box out of sheet metal that fit into the flue to expand out to accommodate both terminations. Terminations are fairly close together and now have sheet metal separating the two.
Client now has troubles turning on one of the inserts if the other one has been running (some of the time). Never has a problem lighting the units if both are turned on...
