Space Heat Pumps

I had posted a while ago that we were getting in air source heat pumps that are for space heating.
They are here and we are finishing testing in our lovely Maine winter.
They are being manufactured for us to our specs.
They produce heated antifreeze, so no refrigerant plumbing is required. The refrigerant side work is done in the factory. You just plumb it in with copper or PEX.

What am I in for?

This was my first season heating with wood and we did pretty well with two cords of not-quite-seasoned (~25%) mixed hardwoods that we bought not knowing any better. Looking to start stocking up, I ordered three cords of green wood at $160 per, which is a steal around here. The guy shows up today with the first "cord" and dumps at least a cord and a half of the cleanest, heaviest oak you've ever seen. I know I hit the jackpot in terms of BTU per dollar, but I'm concerned about the logistics....

Looking for a larger displacement saw

Selling a motorcycle that I really don't use this spring. Most of the money will go into home renovations, but I'm going to take 400-600 of that and buy a nice saw.

I currently have a 18" Echo 40cc. I'd like something in the 55cc+ range. Something that will strike fear into all those nearby. :)

Jonsered makes the 2172 and 2166 that are a 70cc. Thats quite a bit of displacement.

What others are good options? Not opposed to buying lightly used.

I'm not obsessed with how big of a bar...

Trying to decide on Harman vs. Quadrafire

Hello All,
This site has been a huge help to this novice trying to learn about Pellet stoves. After doing lots of on-line research, I'm still struggling to decide on a pellet stove, and yes, it's the age-old question of Harman vs. Quadrafire. I've seen this described as the same as a "Ford vs. Chevy" debate, but nevertheless I'd value some input.

The stove will be going into our 1100 sq ft. seasonal cottage in New Hampshire. We are looking to be able to use the cottage from early spring...

Hi all,

I've made a few posts here, been lurking for a bit, was doing the whole pellet vs. wood stove thing for a couple months now. Pretty much decided on pellet for less clearance needs = less room taken inside, comparative ease of venting, and less time required (assuming everything works right) in fuel. I'm fairly handy so not terribly scared of component replacement, other than the "man I just got this thing" aspect <>

At any rate, I figured before I get that far and put anything in...

What do you use to clean the crud build up off of your saw chain? A local guy here years ago would return your sharpened chains looking factory new and he had soaked them in something to clean them up..

Here's a Craigslist ad where the owner doesn't seem to know whether it's 1/2 cord or full cord, whether you will pay him or he will pay you and whether a load that "looks like" 2.5 cu. yds. (67.5 cu. ft) will actually be a full cord (128 cu. ft.). Actually, a "chord" has no legal definition and I imagine he might be aware of that.

I'm guessing he's not as confused as he sounds but that he only wants to deliver to complete idiots.

It's February 24th, every door and window is open, it's after 9:00 PM, my pellet stove has been off for over a week, Dafodils are blooming, trees are budding, grass is greening, I'm eating chilled yogurt with blue berries and looking at a pellet stove forum.

Did I mention .... it's February 24th?

Enviro Empress Troubleshooting Blower

It seems as though the blower on my Enviro Empress has stopped working. Not the combustion blower, but the blower that blows air from the room through the heat exchanger.

Any idea what the cause might be or how to fix this?

Hopper clean-up, pellet flow improved.

Could've waited until the end of the season to pull the hopper and replace the base gasket, but I got bored and decided to pull it while the weather was good. While I was at it I hit all the rough welds with my grinder to smooth out the base so there would be less resistance for better pellet flow, then sprayed the hopper with some flat black BBQ paint. After I reinstalled the hopper and the paint cured, I rubbed it out using 1500 sandpaper and pam vegetable spray.

Now the pellets will just...

How hard to tear out this ZC?

I am thinking about tearing out this fireplace and building some sort of alcove to house an ideal steel stove. All of the rock is real so I would not want to remove any of it. It will also have to be removed from the front as the back wall is a safe room. Would this be pretty difficult to remove? I have looked up videos but most of them were not helpful for my application as they were tearing out the surrounds as well. Give me some input!

Hey guys.

My stove isn't installed but I found a free offer for firewood. This is what my first few loads added up to.....mind the pink walls. It was from the previous owner.

How much wood do you think I got? I can make a few more trips in a couple hours. All maple.

Frozen beer

I accidentally left a case of beer outside last night. It was 12° this morning. So the whole thing is now frozen solid. It's in cans, so at least they didn't break.

I've left cans in the freezer too long before, they typically are fine, still carbonated and good when they thaw, but never a whole case in the deep freeze.

Fortunately I still have most of another case in the fridge.

I am looking at a new generator. I am between a generac 7500 or the northstar 8000. Now i have a coleman 5500 with a tecumseh that is ungodly loud and started using over a quart of oil in 5hrs of runtime. I havent ran the generator much until this past tuesday night when a tornado came through perryville, mo where i live. I ran it off and on and no more than 5hrs at a time. I want a bigger generator and have been looking at these too very closely. I am looking of opinions on these two and...

Do I need a heat shield?

Hi everyone,

We just bought a small cabin in Eastern Ontario and I was up this past week. The cabin has a small wood oven and it is 2 feet from the wall. I notice that when the oven heats up, the vapor barrier gets really hot and the whole cabin starts to smell like plastic.

Should I create some kind of heat shield around the oven? Could I just get some bricks and stack them by the wall to protect the wall?

Many thanks,
Dale.

Barreto log splitter

I have been offered a little used 20 ton Barreto log splitter with the Subaru EX27 motor (pull start). These are sold primarily as rental units (Home Depot rents them). They are heavily built (twice the weight of the equivalent Ariens, 150 lbs. more than the equivalent Iron and Oak) and very expensive new.

They are set up to require two hands to operate the control lever. I have no idea yet how difficult it would be to defeat that, but it would be a must at times.

Has anyone used one of...

Over the last 3 years I have been testing, tweaking and doing different things to my EC 100
First I finally got a good supply of dry wood -20% Second I got my baro damper settings correct, Third I did the chain turbulators (Wow I can clean the tubes in less than a half hour) I also installed a SS plate overlay on my nozzle. (I went with holes instead of a slot, I figured I could slot it if that didn't work) The boiler works great with it we will see if it protects the nozzle in time. I also...

Upgrading 1988 Heatilator to 2016 Pacific Energy FP30

We've owned our house since 1998, the third owner of a 2300 sq. ft story and a half, built by the original owner who had no business being his own general contractor. If he owned a square or a level, he sure didn't know how to use them. And the concept of a header was lost on him. So with this previous history of surprise revelations, we apprehensively tore into the replacement of the original fireplace.
The Heatilator was in dire need of an upgrade. The interior firebrick sheets were...

Blew the 5amp fuse on the circuit board. Replaced. Now on shut down everything shuts down but combustion fan. Disconnected wire on POF switch. Fan keeps running. Thinking (from reading other threads) I may have a shorted triac. Am I analyzing this correctly? If so, how would I know which triac to replace? Upper, lower, or both? Thanks
