Help With Echo Weed Whacker

I have a pretty big bank that is too steep to mow. Every year it gets out of hand because I hate weed whacking. This year I want to change that. My main frustration with it is I fight like a dog to get my old echo started. This echo was given to me by my father in law. Long ago he used it to cut retention ponds. It's got wide handle bars and the throttle moved to them, A nice harness. It's good for doing big heavy duty areas which is what I need. But it's never worked right for me. I have...

My brother has an older water softener that has developed a leak. I an having trouble finding the part. its the coupling for the softened water to exit to the house. its a 3/4" copper pipe. one side is sweat on the other side is a flattened flange type. I've been studying utvs for a couple years now. Accountant said this year would be a good year to make a farm purchase of this size. I settled on the Kubota and plan on working the guts out of it.

Pellet Stove Regret

Well, after year 3 of having our Enviro Empress Insert, I can honestly say that I regret buying it. We replaced a wood burner with this pellet stove, thinking that it would be easier for our in and out of the house lifestyle. Last year at the end of the season it stopped working. I kept getting a flashing code 3. As it was late in the season, I just put it off until this past summer. There is no local Enviro service to be had near me, and I wound up having a cleaning/service done by a local...

This is a place for roadside diggers to post pics of their prize soon to be ashes.
These were in the biodegradable section of the city dump.

Left the gnarly stuff as that's all there was. These were found rolling uglies out of the way
and hiding underneath from previous scroungers. Luckily overlooked.

What to do with brush piles?

I don't have a huge property (.49acre lot) but as I collect more wood, I seem to end up with brush piles that accumulate. I have taken a lot of loads to the city when they offer free limb drop-off, and I have also had my tree service friend chip them when I have had him come do tree work.

Yesterday I burned a few of the piles, and I am thinking that this is probably the easiest way to get rid of them.

Right now I have about 9 or 10 of them scattered about the yard. Some will be able to...

I got called the Anti-Lorax, should I feel bad?

I was out on date night the other day and came upon one of my old neighbors who works in the restaurant. She was talking to us, and joking about how it was totally normal that I would show up to the bonfire with an armful of oak flooring and ask if anyone had a wheel barrow... she then went on to mention that I was the anti-lorax, and I definitely don't speak for the trees!

Granted, this was a few years ago when we cleared down a lot of stuff that needed to go, but I burst out laughing. I...

Black soot..... RIP little bird

Rest in Peace little birdy. :(

We've had warm weather lately and I haven't used the stove in about a week. I finally fired it up this past Wednesday when the temps dropped to the high 20's. I ran it nonstop for two days and finally shut it down before going to work today. After work I decided to clean it and noticed black soot all over the inside of the burn box and the window was white. This never happened with the pellets I'm burning but I figured maybe I got a bad bag. While vacuuming...

pile of 6 x 6's and building wood storage

I came into a stack of 6 by 6's and I want to use them to build something to store my wood. My first thought was a wood shed using the longer ones as posts, but I have a tendency to over build and use several bags of concrete on each post for decks and such. Since I don't know how many years of cutting and burning I have left, I'm thinking about something more temporary. So racks of some sort seems like a better choice. I have a few of the ones with angled end pieces as 2 by 4s using...

Thinking of buying a pellet mill...

So we recently moved to Montana (Oct '16) and I turned 40! Any way for the past few years I've been keeping an eye out for niche ideas to earn *extra $$.
I live outside of Helena and drive past a wood yard twice a day with a pile of sawdust twice as big as my 3 br house, so I got the idea of using that sawdust to make a product. And of course pellets and bricks are pretty much all I can come up with. Buying a pellet mill means you will be able to produce livestock feed as well but that's a...

Space Heat Pumps

I had posted a while ago that we were getting in air source heat pumps that are for space heating.
They are here and we are finishing testing in our lovely Maine winter.
They are being manufactured for us to our specs.
They produce heated antifreeze, so no refrigerant plumbing is required. The refrigerant side work is done in the factory. You just plumb it in with copper or PEX.
Here is a link: http://www.americansolartechnics.com/products/space-heat-pumps/
They can produce hot...

Frozen beer

I accidentally left a case of beer outside last night. It was 12° this morning. So the whole thing is now frozen solid. It's in cans, so at least they didn't break.

I've left cans in the freezer too long before, they typically are fine, still carbonated and good when they thaw, but never a whole case in the deep freeze.

Fortunately I still have most of another case in the fridge.

Good Morning! I'm a long time reader, first time poster . . . getting ready to finally take the plunge and add a wood boiler to my oil hot water system . . . As all newbies, I've been reading and researching all I can. I'm now to the point that I feel I need to be looking for some experts, friends, contacts, contractors etc in my neck of the woods for some help and specific questions . . .

Wood boiler's integrated into residential hot water is kind of an odd duck in South East...

Well, maybe it's not, I'm not sure, but I'm going to set it up next Tuesday. It's 800,000 BTUS. The people that installed it originally used B-Vent to chimney it up out of the steel building. It had a chimney fire and all the aluminum smelted down back into the heat exchanger. Oooopsie!

I'll post some pics of this monster next week. It's made by Wood Master.

Replacement skylight bubbles?

I am replacing my roofing shingles this spring and have a 30 year old plastic skylight bubble that needs to be replaced. Problem is the skylight doesn't have a manufacturer mark on it and our contractor isn't sure where to get a replacement bubble.

I would install a modern window or skylight but the inside portion underneath the skylight has a sheetrocked 'viewport' (?) up through the ceiling to the skylight and all of that would likely need to be torn out and redone to fit a window. I'm...

How many pellets do you use?

We bought a 50000 BTU stove in December to offset ridiculous propane prices ($2.50/gal) in our propane-heated neighborhood. We have a 2500sq ft house with stove in family room and have used it exclusively to heat the house. Since December, we have averaged 1.1 bags/day. First full month of use was $147 in pellets. I'm looking forward to seeing how the numbers add up at the end of the heating season.
